Vu1 Becomes California Lighting Technology Center Affiliate
Independent research organization provides collaborative opportunities for energy‐efficient lighting
SEATTLE, December 10, 2008 – Vu1 Corporation(OTCBB: VUOC) announced today that is has become an affiliate member of the California Lighting Technology Center (CLTC), an independent organization that promotes collaborative research in the field of safe, energy‐efficient lighting. The more than 35 affiliate members of the CLTC includes large and small lighting manufacturers, research organizations (universities, think tanks), utilities and government agencies, and all share the CLTC’s mission to find more efficient, cleaner lighting solutions. Membership in the CLTC will provide Vu1 the opportunity to collaborate on research with other efficiency leaders in the lighting industry, as well as help accelerate adoption into the market of Vu1’s energy‐efficient, full feature, mercury‐free light bulbs.
“The CLTC is a leading authority on energy‐efficient lighting and it is an honor to join this organization. We feel that joining the CLTC is a testament to both the quality and promise of our product,” said Richard Herring, CEO of Vu1. “We look forward to working with the CLTC and our fellow affiliates to drive awareness of and enthusiasm for our technology and continue to develop our technology to meet the needs of the industry.”
Developed in 2003 through a collaborative effort between the California Energy Commission, the U.S. Department of Energy, and the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, the CLTC facilitates the development of energy efficient lighting and daylighting technologies. A neutral, independent organization, the CLTC is housed and operated at the University of California, Davis.
“We believe there is a pressing need for new lighting technologies to address our growing efficiency demands and welcome Vu1 as a partner and an affiliate to the Lighting Technology Center,” said Michael Siminovitch, Director of the CLTC. “Vu1 shares our mission of creating creating environmentally‐friendly lighting solutions and the CLTC looks forward to partnering with them.”
Vu1’ s Electron Stimulated Luminescence™ ESL™ technology is the cornerstone of the company’s development of a highly energy‐efficient, incandescent light quality, mercury‐free light bulb. A growing body of evidence continues to show the health and environmental impacts associated with the mercury contained in each Compact Fluorescent Lamp (CFL). Earlier this year, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) Maine Compact Fluorescent Lamp Study brought to light new, more serious risks associated with CFLs. Report findings included:
- Breaking a single CFL can increase toxic mercury vapor levels in a room – particularly to the
height of an infant/toddler – possibly as high as 300 times the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency’s standard accepted safety level.
- Disturbing (vacuuming, walking over, etc.) a carpeted floor where the bulb was broken and
cleaned up can cause mercury vapor levels to rise back to 100 times the accepted level, with the
hazard lasting for several days after breakage.
- Because of these findings, the report recommends that due to the high chance of breakage, along with the near impossibility of clean up and long lasting effects of mercury, consumers should not use CFLs in carpeted rooms where children, infants or pregnant women live.
“While CFLs have played an important step in providing consumers more energy‐efficient lighting solutions, studies continue to show the health hazards related to mercury must be addressed,” said Ron Davis, Vu1’s Chief Marketing Officer. “We look forward to providing consumers with the environmentally conscious lighting solutions they want, without any of the current risk.”
